Dense Soda Ash

White granular solid

Dense Soda Ash, scientifically known as sodium carbonate, is a high-quality, versatile chemical widely used across various industries primarily in glass production.

Distinguished by its higher density compared to standard soda ash, it offers unique advantages in specific applications where high bulk density is beneficial. It is used extensively in glass manufacturing for sheet glass, float glass, configured glass, container glass, light bulbs and tubes, and glass fibers.

Applications

Tata Chemicals manufactures Dense Soda Ash using the ammonia-soda process. As a highly versatile compound, it is used across multiple industries. We are among the world's largest and most geographically diversified soda ash companies, with manufacturing facilities in India, the UK, the USA, and Kenya.

  • Chemical production

Dense Soda Ash is used in the production of chemicals such as sodium silicate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium percarbonate, sodium chromate, and sodium dichromate.

  • Silicate manufacturing

The silica industry uses sodium silicate (produced from soda ash) as a key raw material to create precipitated silica. Highly dispersible silica (HDS) and other speciality silica products are manufactured by catalysing a reaction between sodium silicate and mineral acid under controlled process conditions.

  • Metal smelting

Dense Soda Ash acts as a flux in metal smelting, lowering the melting point of silica in ore to form a fusible slag.

  • Lithium mining

Dense Soda Ash is used in the precipitation process to create lithium carbonate, which is widely used in EV battery applications.

  • Li-ion battery manufacturing

Lithium-ion battery recycling units use Dense Soda Ash to form metal salts, such as lithium carbonate, which have applications in glass manufacturing.

  • Solar glass for PV module manufacturing

Dense Soda Ash reduces furnace temperatures, providing a more sustainable alternative during solar glass manufacturing for PV module production.

  • Glass manufacturing (flat glass)

Dense Soda Ash is used to manufacture glass, where it reduces the melting temperature of the sand used in glass formation and helps in the 'workability' or shaping of glass articles such as tableware and float glass.

  • Glass manufacturing (bottles and containers)

Soda ash lowers the melting temperature of sand, facilitating the workability and shaping of glass articles such as bottles and containers.

  • Ceramic production (glazes, durability)

It is used in ceramic production as a soluble deflocculant in glazes and ceramic slips, helping to thin glaze slurries.
