Tata Chemicals signs MOU with CSIR-CECRI, Karaikudi

Mumbai: Tata Chemicals, the world’s leading player in basic chemistry products and a leading player in India through its consumer and specialty products, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CSIR-CECRI (Central Electrochemical Research Institute), Karaikudi, to explore collaborative technology for scaling up the manufacture of cathode materials for lithium-ion cells.

Under this MOU, TCL and CSIR-CECRI envisage building a partnership which would leverage CSIR-CECRI’s intellectual property, capabilities and infrastructure to test and validate multiple possible cathode chemistries, with a view to eventually manufacture lithium-ion batteries for various applications. This partnership is intended to build a strong foundation on commercially scalable cathode chemistries and is in line with the focus on increased electrification in transportation and the thrust on cleaner forms of energy in India.

Speaking on the partnership, R Mukundan, managing director, Tata Chemicals, said, “At our Innovation Centre in Pune, we continue to explore newer frontiers in chemistry, with a view to apply science to solve the challenges of tomorrow. Together with CECRI’s strengths in electrochemistry, we will build capabilities in new-age energy materials for lithium-ion cells.” With a transformation agenda built on innovation and sustainability, this move is in line with the company’s strategy to grow their specialty business.

The Tata Chemicals Innovation Centre has been the company’s technology and innovation hub, providing sustainable differentiators to its businesses with the advantage of multi-disciplinary expertise for customer-centric solutions.
