TCSRDs skill development program encourages establishment of Samarthan Saksham Foundation

Formed by 40 young members from Mithapur and Okhamandal who received training at the skill development center of TCSRD

Mithapur, 6th December 2021: Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD), the CSR arm of Tata Chemicals, inaugurated the Samarthan Saksham Foundation. With an aim to create livelihood through entrepreneurship, the foundation has been formed by 40 young community members that received training at TCSRD’s Technical Training Institute and have already bagged their first contract order from Tata Chemicals.

Recently, a skill development program introduced by TCSRD and NABARD engaged 180 community members for a 45 days training program. This program involved technical training in various industry operational areas such as forklift driving, industrial electrician, fitter & turner, welder, AC and Refrigerators mechanic, and, driver, etc. Along with this, the members were also trained to pass the RTO examination for heavy motor vehicle license. Post the completion of this skill development program, 40 members which included 27 women and 13 men came together and formed the Samarthan Saksham Foundation, under Section 8 Companies Act. The foundation has received its first contract order from Tata Chemicals, where 4 women members will work as Forklift Drivers.

“It is our honour to launch the Samarthan Saksham Foundation. Livelihood generation and community empowerment are important pillars of our CSR initiatives at Tata Chemicals. It is a great achievement that our skill development program motivated 40 members to establish this foundation. We would like to thank NABARD for providing their support towards this initiative. Tata Chemicals will continue to work on projects that equip Indian youth with the opportunity to skill/upskill themselves in an environment that prepares them to become industry ready” said Mr. N Kamath Vice President Manufacturing & Factory Manager, Tata Chemicals.

Rural areas of the country have been facing a challenge when it comes to technical skills and employability. TCSRD’s Skill Development Program was launched in 2014 with the goal of increasing rural employability and enterprise development. It began with two basic courses, tailoring and beauty & wellness. Following that, connections were made with partners all over Gujarat, offering a variety of courses such as welder and fitter technician, wireman, CNC operator etc. Continuing with the success of this effort, a technical training institute with advanced level courses in fashion & technology, welder, fitter, household electrician, and computer literacy was established in 2019. Till date more than 5000 young community members have been trained through this initiative.
