Tata Chemicals institutes 'Best Chemistry Teacher' award; commemorates International Year of Chemistry 2011

  • Launches a nationwide initiative to recognise chemistry teachers
  • Initiative in collaboration with Association of Chemistry Teachers

Mumbai: The United Nations has declared the year 2011 as the ‘International Year of Chemistry (IYC) 2011’ — a worldwide initiative focusing on the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the wellbeing of humankind (www.chemistry2011.org). As the official activity partner, Tata Chemicals (TCL) is involved through the Human Touch of Chemistry campaign website — specifically created to inculcate the love for chemistry in young minds (www.humantouchofchemistry.com).

Today, on the occasion of Teachers Day, Tata Chemicals instituted the ’Best Chemistry Teacher Award (BCTA)’ to recognise chemistry teachers in India. The initiative has been launched in collaboration with the Association of Chemistry Teachers (ACT). Through this initiative, Tata Chemicals will recognise exemplary individuals involved in teaching chemistry and its allied components.

Speaking on the initiative, Murali Sastry, chief scientific officer, Tata Chemicals, said, “Most of us owe it all to our teachers. But it is also true that once we’ve passed through the portals of education, we tend to forget the dedication our teachers showed in making winners out of us — ordinary people. As a chemistry professional, I am glad to be associated with the ’Best Chemistry Teacher Award (BCTA)’ initiative that addresses the critical need to recognise the role our teachers played in shaping minds.”

Nominations of teachers involved in teaching class 11 and 12, graduate courses and postgraduate levels are solicited through the website www.humantouchofchemistry.com apart from the vast network of Association of Chemistry Teachers in India. The winners will be selected by an eminent panel comprising scientists, industry professionals and academia apart from the response of students through various social media platforms.

Mr Sastry further added, “Chemistry is a vast subject and touches each and every one of us in many ways in our day-to-day lives. In this International Year of Chemistry, BCTA is our humble way to paying a tribute to our chemistry teachers. I am very excited about the process and as the chairperson of the selection panel, I am looking forward to get a lot of nominations from deserving candidates.”
