Tata Chemicals launches Centre of Excellence to Safeguard Marine Biodiversity

Announces the commencement of the ‘World on Wheels’ project

Mithapur, September 17, 2018: Commemorating the Tata’s 150 glorious years of serving the society through science and nation building, Tata Chemicals today, launched the first-ever centre of excellence for conservation of marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystem in India. In addition to the centre of excellence, an IT enabled bus with 24 seated computers backed by numerous software suites and cloud integration was also launched as part of the “World on Wheels” (WOW) project. The WOW project is a joint initiative of Tata Chemicals and HP to bridge the digital education gap faced by those living in the region of Okhamandal.

Rooted in Tata’s core sustainability values, the novel centre of excellence will serve as an innovation platform to spearhead successful marine conservation strategies to a wider group of people, beyond marine professionals, to save endangered species and protect the oceans.

The centre aims to further strengthen Tata Chemicals’ efforts through a dedicated knowledge, research and field implementation institution, which shall endeavour to build and sustain coastal and marine ecosystems, in a manner that is inclusive and leads to sustainable livelihoods of local communities. A natural extension of the Company’s sustainability initiative, ‘Dharti Ko Arpan’, which means dedicated to the earth, the centre intends to conserve the rich diversity of the Devbhoomi Dwarka region of Gujarat in a scientific and holistic manner. through focussed research, scientific studies, public awareness and community initiatives.

Speaking on the launch of the centre of excellence, Mr. R. Mukundan, Managing Director, Tata Chemicals said, “As we commemorate 150 glorious years of Tata, it gives me great pleasure to launch our first centre of excellence to institutionalise the conservation of marine biodiversity. It is important that we provide for the proper conservation and management of the marine ecosystems, which play a vital role in our ocean’s resources and human well-being. We continually look for scientific ways to positively impact society through the sustainability of our programs. With this launch, we take one more step to further the Tata group’s purpose of improving the quality of life and environment for the communities we serve.”

Some of the interventions under TCL’s ‘Dharti Ko Arpan’ program include - Mithapur Coral Reef Restoration, biodiversity plantation, mangrove regeneration near Mithapur, waterfowl conservation at charakla saltworks, save the Whale Shark, save the Asiatic Lion and creation of Eco Clubs to create conservation and awareness on environmental issues.
