Touching lives
Tata Chemicals Europe offers a variety of products used in a wide range of industries. The company not only touches lives but also delivers quality to all its customers.
Animal nutrition

Alkakarb® (sodium bicarbonate) is manufactured by Tata Chemicals Europe for use in poultry and ruminant diets.
Chemicals

Tata Chemicals Europe’s products are utilised as essential raw materials and as processing aids in a wide range of industries including iron and steel, sugar extraction, and oil and gas.
As a source of sodium ions, sodium carbonate is used in the production of important inorganic chemicals such as silicates, phosphates, chromates and percarbonates. The carbonate ion is a vital component in the production of metal carbonates such as zirconium, nickel and cobalt.

Detergents

The detergents industry is a major consumer of soda ash.
Sodium carbonate, due to its level of alkalinity, is used to boost builders (water softeners) such as zeolites and phosphates. Sodium Carbonate is a key raw material in the production of percarbonates, silicates and phosphates which are also used extensively in household cleaning products.
Sodium bicarbonate may be substituted for sodium carbonate where a milder detergent is required. Its limited solubility is also advantageous in the production of hard surface cleaners.
The pH level of Crex® a unique crystalline form of sodium sesquicarbonate, is between that of soda ash and sodium bicarbonate and its builder properties are such that it can be formulated into detergents or added as a water softener.

Environmental

Sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate are widely used in the treatment of both aqueous and gaseous emissions. For example, these chemicals are used to neutralise waste water and control its pH.
Calcium chloride is used to treat waste streams containing phosphates, fluorides or sulphates which precipitate out as an insoluble calcium salt. The insoluble salts can then be separated by filtration or settling. Calcium chloride may also be used in the wet scrubber stage of an incineration plant to remove phosphates, fluorides and sulphates.
Flue gas treatment
Briskarb® – a special grade of sodium bicarbonate for flue gas treatment – is used for the treatment of acidic flue gases to ensure compliance with environmental legislation on gaseous emissions. Briskarb® has been proved to be more efficient and cost effective than alternative alkaline reagents.

Food

Sodium bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate is used as a 'raising agent' in a wide range of bakery products. It reacts with other ingredients to release carbon dioxide which causes the baking dough to rise.
A range of grades like microfine, free flowing quality (FFQ), extra fine, standard, hydrophobic, fine and medium granular are manufactured to meet the demand of the baking industry.
Calcium chloride
Calcium chloride is used as a secondary refrigerant in the production and preservation of a wide variety of perishable goods such as ice cream and poultry.
Calcium deficiency in apples can give rise to a common disorder known as 'bitter pit'. This disorder may be prevented by the use of calcium chloride sprays.

Glass industry

The glass industry is a major user of soda ash. The nature of the continuous glass production process requires a reliable supply of raw materials of high quality and consistency.
Soda ash manufactured by TCEL is used in the large-scale production of flat glass for windows and glass containers such as bottles and tableware. It is also a major component in the production of glass fibre, light bulbs and specialised applications such as television screens.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products

Sodium bicarbonate is a vital ingredient in the production of over- the counter products such as effervescent antacids, analgesic tablets and powders, denture cleansing tablets and toothpaste.
The high purity of the company's sodium bicarbonate conforms to the standards of the European Pharmacopoeia and United States Pharmacopoeia. Sodium bicarbonate is used in haemodialysis treatment products.
Crex® and sodium bicarbonate are used in the formulation of bathing products.
