The
Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development has
supported various environment-friendly energy-generation
schemes in Okhamandal, a region where the potential
of generating renewable energy is immense
Biogas
project: The popularisation of biogas projects
is necessary to save Okhamandal's vegetation.
In this effort, 46 biogas plants were constructed
between 1997 and 1999. Out of around 200 biogas
plants constructed during the previous years,
more than 85 per cent have been run successfully.
This
project was been taken up in collaboration with
the Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation. Its funding
structure is designed in such a way that the beneficiaries'
contribution is in the form of labour and not
cash. The result is that rural women now cook
in a smoke-free environment, and the waste slurry
of the plant is available as excellent organic
manure.
Solar
lanterns: To disseminate information about
solar energy and its use in a rural environment,
demonstrations of solar lamps were held in various
villages. The Tata Chemicals Society for Rural
Development coordinates between beneficiaries
and the Rural Energy Agency to procure solar lanterns
and reduce the dependence on electricity.
