The Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development has created a variety of infrastructure facilities at Okhamandal and Babrala to aid its rural development efforts. A secondary benefit of these projects has been the creation of jobs during the construction period

Okhamandal
Windmill project: In collaboration with the Gujarat Energy Development Agency, two windmills were erected to lift drinking water from community wells in the villages of Poshitra and Saamlasar. The initial performance of the windmills was encouraging, but they were damaged in the devastating cyclone that hit the Gujarat coast in June 1998. A new windmill was later installed in Khatumba village.

Other projects: The construction and repair of school buildings, cattle sheds and other such work is undertaken periodically. In 1997-99, the following projects were undertaken:

	The repair of Surajkaradi road, an important link road that was in bad condition.
	A cattle enclosure was constructed at Vasai village. Villagers contributed one-third of the expenditure and the rest was paid for by TCSRD.
	Furniture was provided to a village school at Arambhda.
	Low-cost latrines were constructed in many villages.

Babrala
Brick-paved tracks: Ever since TCSRD started its operations in the Babrala region, projects for the construction of brick-paved tracks have been taken up on a priority basis.

The programme aims at having all the village roads paved with brick. These sturdy tracks, besides improving conditions within the village, link them to main roads.

The project involves the active participation of villagers. Till date, 16 km of new roads have been constructed in 10 villages and 2.5 km of raod has been repaired.

Primary health centre: TSCRD took up and completed the construction of a primary health centre at Gunnaur at the request of the state government's health department.

Others: A piped drinking water project is being implemented on a trial basis in one of the local villages. The electrification of three villages and the construction of a main road in Babrala town are other projects that have been undertaken.
