Mithapur
and Okhamandal are located in the Jamnagar district
of Gujarat. Okhamandal, a land where many kingdoms
and civilisations thrived in the past, has a rich
cultural history. The Vaghers, a proud martial
people, are the predominant community here. The
Tata Chemicals complex at Mithapur is the only
major industry here, apart from a cargo handling
facility at the nearby Okha port.
The
Mithapur township, privately owned by Tata Chemicals,
is located on the Arabian Sea coast, 10 km south
of the Okha port and 20 km north of the holy city
of Dwarka. It is part of the 5,398-acres of freehold
land obtained in the 1930s on long-term lease
from the government of the erstwhile princely
state of Baroda. The present population of Mithapur
is about 15,000.
The
township occupies an area of approximately 663
acres. It has a bank, a post and telegraph office,
a railway station connected by a broadguage railway
line, a police station, a telephone exchange and
an airstrip constructed by the company. The company
also runs a well-equipped guesthouse with 50 air-conditioned
and non-airconditioned rooms and suites with dining
facilities.
Other
facilities include a market with 300 shops, a
hospital, cinema hall and six parks. Tata Chemicals
operates all the municipal services in the town
including an uninterrupted supply of electricity
from its captive co-generation power plant.
Besides
the well-equipped hospital, a mobile clinic, a
family-planning unit and child-immunisation centres
look after the healthcare needs of the employees
as well as the people living in the 42 villages
of Okhamandal. The 100-bed hospital has sophisticated
diagnostic and treatment facilities and highly
qualified medical personnel.
The company provides for the cultural and recreational
needs of the community through the libraries,
clubs, cinemas, playgrounds and public gardens
it has established. There is even a toy library,
skating rink and a mini-train for children. The
train leads to the seafront, where residents and
visitors alike come to enjoy the natural beauty
of the sunsets at the Mithapur seashore.
To
cater to the diverse needs of its staff and the
local community, Tata Chemicals supports a large
number of social and cultural institutions through
grants. People living in nearby villages participate
in some of these activities as well. Mithapur
also has places of worship for all communities.
'Jhanda Chowk' is the heart of the town from which
roads lead to the residential areas, the market
and the beach, situated two km away.
Training and education
There are a host of schools catereing to the educational
needs of children. These schools have about 8,000
students on their rolls and are staffed by over
200 teachers.
The
Apprentice school in Mithapur is open to all students
who have passed the 12th grade examinations. The
school offers three-year courses for fitters,
electricians, welders, boiler attendants and chemical
plant operators. It also offers one year training
after ITI for electricians and instrumentation
technicians. The apprentice school has an intake
of 170 students per year.
